How to format a LinkedIn post in 2026

A LinkedIn post is plain text, so the layout comes from line breaks. How to space it, why pasted formatting breaks, and how to type lists that stay lists.

How do you format a LinkedIn post in 2026?

With line breaks, short paragraphs and plain text. As of October 2026, LinkedIn's post box still has no bold, italic or bullet buttons, so the layout comes from where you press Enter. Open with one short line, keep each paragraph to a line or two, and leave a blank line between paragraphs.

An example post, formatted for LinkedIn (invented)

We stopped sending proposals as PDFs. Clients kept asking the same three questions after reading them. So we put the answers on one page they could reply to. 1. The price, first 2. What happens in week one 3. What we need from them Clients now reply within a day, and our first calls take half the time. What do you send before a first call?

How do you add space between paragraphs?

Press Enter twice to leave a blank line between paragraphs. LinkedIn keeps the line breaks you type, on a computer and in the app, so a blank line is all the spacing a post needs.

Why does the first line matter so much?

A phone shows about 140 characters of a LinkedIn post before see more, and a computer about 210. So the first line should make sense alone and stop before the fold. The limits are in LinkedIn character limits, and what to write there is in LinkedIn hooks.

How do you keep formatting when you paste into LinkedIn?

You keep the line breaks and lose everything else. LinkedIn's post box takes plain text, so bold, italics and headings from a document vanish, and Markdown from an AI chat shows up as asterisks and # signs. Paste, then fix the layout by hand with line breaks, and check it in a preview before you post.

What survives a paste into LinkedIn

Plain text stays. Formatting codes do not

  • Line breaks and blank lines
  • Typed bullets or numbers at a line start
  • Emojis

How LinkedIn treats text in a post: the post box takes plain text.

Why do asterisks show up in my LinkedIn post?

Asterisks show up when a draft was copied from an AI chat that writes in Markdown. In Markdown, two asterisks on each side of a word mean bold. The chat window draws them as bold; LinkedIn shows them as typed.

The fix is to ask the chat for plain text before you copy: no Markdown, no headings, no bullets made with asterisks. Then delete any that remain.

What else comes along with copied text?

Copied drafts often carry characters you cannot see, such as zero-width spaces, plus em dashes and curly quotes that readers now link with AI. The free AI text cleaner strips them in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.

How do you add bullet points to a LinkedIn post?

Type them. Start each line with a bullet character, a number with a full stop, or a small emoji, then press Enter for the next item. LinkedIn keeps line breaks, so a typed list stays a list. A bulleted list pasted from a document loses its bullets, so type the markers yourself.

Three ways to mark a list in plain text

Pick the marker by what the list is

  • Numbers: 1. 2. 3.

Steps, rankings, anything with an order.

  • A bullet character

Options or points with no order. Copy one from a character map.

  • One small emoji

A marker for each item, used the same way every time.

Our own guidance for plain text lists on LinkedIn.

How long should a list item be?

Keep each list item to one line on a phone, about 40 characters, so the markers line up and the list reads at a glance. When an item needs a reason, put the reason in a sentence after the list.

What about bold and emojis?

Bold on LinkedIn is a set of look-alike Unicode letters, with real costs for search and screen readers, covered in should you use bold text on LinkedIn. How many emojis help is in should you use emojis on LinkedIn.

Quick answers

Type them. Start each line with a bullet character, a number with a full stop, or a small emoji, then press Enter. LinkedIn keeps the line breaks you type, so the list stays a list. Bullets pasted from a document are lost, so type the markers yourself and check the preview.
