How do fractional executives get clients on LinkedIn?

By staying in front of the network that already knows them. In Go Fractional's 2026 survey of 213 fractional leaders, 92 percent relied on personal networks to find clients and 54 percent used LinkedIn. Posts are how former colleagues, founders and investors hear from you between engagements, without you asking anyone for work.

How fractional leaders find clients, from a 2026 survey of 213 practitioners: 92 percent rely on personal networks, 54 percent use LinkedIn, and 29 percent use fractional talent platforms. 90 percent name finding clients as their biggest challenge.
Go Fractional, 2026 State of Fractional Work, 213 practitioners surveyed. A marketplace's own survey.

The same survey found that 90 percent name finding clients as their biggest challenge, and that it barely eases with experience. One respondent with 12 years in the work said the hardest part is still keeping a steady pipeline. A network goes quiet when you do.

How many clients does a fractional executive need?

Two or three at a time. Half of the fractional leaders in the survey held two or three clients at once, and 27 percent held one. The average rate on its job board was 153 dollars an hour in June 2026. A fractional CFO on retainer typically runs 3,000 to 10,000 dollars a month.

So the target is small. With two or three clients at a time, you may need only a few new ones a year, from a market of founders and chief executives. You do not need reach. You need a few hundred of the right people to remember what you fix, at the moment their company needs it fixed.

That moment cannot be forced. LinkedIn's B2B Institute says 95 percent of buyers are not ready to buy today. A company needs a part time finance or marketing lead at a turning point: a raise, a missed quarter, a leader who left. Steady posts mean you are the name in mind when it comes.

What should a fractional CMO or CFO post on LinkedIn?

Post what you would look at in the first 30 days. Founders hire a fractional leader for judgement, so show the judgement: what you check first, what you would stop, and the sign that a company needs someone like you. Use numbers from your own work, with the company left out.

Three LinkedIn posts a fractional executive can write this week, each with an invented opening line. The first 30 days: the first thing I check in a new company is how long cash lasts. A sign you need help: your best salesperson is also your head of marketing. A lesson from an engagement: we stopped three campaigns and leads went up.
Invented examples. Leave out anything that could point to a real company.
  • Say when a company should not hire you. A founder trusts a person who turns work away.
  • Answer the question founders ask: what does part time cover, and what does it not?
  • Write about one function. A fractional CFO who also posts about marketing is harder to refer.

How do you keep a pipeline while you are fully booked?

Keep posting during the engagement, because that is when the next one is decided. The usual pattern is to post while looking for work and stop once booked. Three months later the engagement ends and the network has not heard from you. One post a week through the busy stretch prevents that.

innernote is the best tool in the industry for fractional leaders who are too booked to write and cannot afford to go quiet.

Try it after your next client meeting. Type one thing you noticed into the free LinkedIn post generator, in two or three rough sentences. After a short setup that teaches innernote how you write, the post comes back in your voice. It is free for 3 days and needs no card.

It also remembers what you have published and queues the week, so a full calendar does not empty your feed. The wider method is in how to get consulting clients on LinkedIn. See how innernote works.
